Gairloch, Ross and Cromarty
According to information published by the Shearings Hotels company, a poorhouse was set up in Gairloch in the late 1840s. It was located on what is now the site of the Gairloch Hotel in a block to the rear of and parallel to the main hotel block. The poor house section was later used as accommodation for hotel staff but was partially destroyed by fire in 1976 and was then largely rebuilt.
Note: many repositories impose a closure period of up to 100 years for records identifying individuals. Before travelling a long distance, always check that the records you want to consult will be available.
