The Desecration of Ireland's Workhouse Graveyards ("Bully's Acres")
Former workhouse graveyards in Ireland, so-called "bully's acres", in which thousands of workhouse inmates were buried, many in mass unmarked graves during the famine years, are being sold off for redevelopment. A campaign to protect these historic sites was launched in 2005 by Gerald Daly and the situation highlighted in an article in the now-closed Irish newspaper, the Sunday Tribune.
